Managing Your IAB Relationships
Directors who have been particularly successful in retaining member companies through good times and bad will share and discuss strategies and practices for developing strong relationships with champions and promoting effectively their gatekeeping and technology transfer efforts. The unique needs of the small business member will also be addressed.

Recruiting New Members, Large and Small
During the economic downturn, directors need to be particularly creative in recruiting new members. For instance, while large firms (greater than 500 employees) have always been the I/UCRC mainstay, directors have increased their focus on small firms and memberships from this group have increased by more than sixty percent over past three years. This panel session will highlight successful strategies centers are using to recruit new members including small businesses.

Fostering Team Science at Multi-University I/UCRCs: Expert Panel Discussion of Directors' Challenges and Tools
Our increasingly complex, multi-university I/UCRCs present unique challenges – and opportunities – for fostering innovation through team science, at multiple levels. Besides multi-institution executive teams, our larger I/UCRCs can have multi-institution, scientific project teams as well as multi-disciplinary, single-institution collaborations. A panel of successful directors of large Centers discusses their favorite tools for building effective teamwork at different levels of a multi-university I/UCRC, and the challenges that call out for these collaborative tools - like selecting and assimilating new university sites, capitalizing on cross-university projects, and managing imbalances in member support across multiple university sites

Videoconferencing and Other Technology-based Tools to Enhance Communications
Given the realities of a depressed economy and the environmental costs of travel, Centers are trying new ways to communicate with their sites and members, and technology is delivering effective and cost-efficient alternatives for bringing the team together in real time. Directors and other IUCRC representatives who have tried webinars, videoconferencing and an all electronic meeting will share the before, during, and after phases of their experiences, and reflect on how these means contribute to the Center’s ongoing success.

The Emerging Innovation-focused Science and Technology (S&T) Policy
As we move away from a focus on Recovery Act for funding S&T, the new administration has signaled its intention to embrace an Innovation Strategy to help achieve national economic and societal goals. A nationally known policy analyst will provide an overview of the administration's emerging Innovation Strategy, how it is getting translated into new S&T initiatives and legislation, and how it is likely to affect everything from support for fundamental research, to targeted initiatives for energy, health and security, to cooperative research between industry and universities.

Emergent Industrial R&D Strategies for the Economic Recovery
Joe Fox is the Director of Emerging and External Technologies at Ashland, Inc.,, a Fortune 500 company that provides specialty chemical products, services and solutions for many of the world's most essential needs and industries. Fox will discuss how Ashland's R&D strategy has changed in light of a variety of factors including the recent economic contraction, globalization of R&D, and the movement toward what some observers have labeled the "open innovation" strategy. Implications for cooperative research between industry and university will be emphasized.

Operations Breakout
Incorporating Online Tools into Current Center Operations
The Center for Friction Processing (CFSP), with support from NSF, has developed a set of policies, practices, and procedures which may be of benefit to I/UCRC operations personnel. A wiki provides a detailed example of the approaches taken by the CFSP to various management questions, such as reporting, planning, and setting up an IAB. This session will present the features of the wiki, provide an overview of the tools currently in use by the CFSP, and demonstrate the current state of the tools repository and the stand-alone tools that will be available to all centers in the near future.
