Meeting Objectives
- To provide a forum for NSF, I/UCRC Directors, Evaluators, Operations Staff, and other I/UCRC stakeholders to interact and exchange information and ideas about best practices, and common issues and concerns
- To afford NSF the opportunity to brief the I/UCRCs on program-related issues and information, including opportunities for supplemental funding and synergies with other government and industry programs
- To facilitate peer exchange on technical and management issues and to promote increased collaboration and cooperation among Centers
- To illuminate trends in relationships between federal, industry, and academic partners and explore opportunities and implications for Centers

Recruiting Member Companies: An Inside View of Firm Decision Making
How and why do firms decide to join or not to join a Center? Hear the findings of a recent I/UCRC-sponsored study at North Carolina State University that asked this question of 50+ U.S. companies. Representatives from two of these companies will provide a retrospective of their decisionmaking process, and insights useful to I/UCRCs in their marketing and recruitment efforts, especially in a challenged economy

Research Planning and Decision Making
Directors will share how they handle a variety of research-related planning and decision-making activities, including: how to develop short and longer term research agendas; how to manage a center’s research portfolio; how and when to phase out projects and thrust areas; and how to promote effective “team science” across sites.

Meeting the Challenge of Self-sufficiency
Over the past five years, 25+ I/UCRCs have “graduated” from the I/UCRC program andmet the challenge of sustaining and growing without NSF funding. The results of the first comprehensive study of the status of graduated centers will shed light on their measures of success, and Directors from graduated centers will share their highlights and lowlights on their paths to self-sufficiency, even when facing national economic challenges.

The Hybrid I/UCRC: Different Models, Different Challenges
As they mature, some I/UCRCs move toward more organizationally complex structures, including “hybrid” centers that receive significant funding from non-industry sources, such as State and Federal agencies. Directors from hybrid Centers will show different extensions of the basic I/UCRC model, how they function, and the unique challenges they pose, with a focus on how these models can thrive in today’s challenging economic climate
